  • In one of the strangest finishes you’ll see on a soccer field, the Neosho Lady Wildcats dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to Lebanon on Thursday, 3-2.
After a Paige O’Neill goal late in the second half sent it to overtime, the Lady Wildcats came out dominating in the overtime period and controlled the ball for the first several minutes.
    And then, cue the craziness.
After a ball scooted away from the Lady Yellowjackets and into the box in front of Neosho’s goal, Lady Wildcats’ keeper Matty Liedtke raced to it and, in the process of going for the loose ball, collided with a Lebanon attacker. But, to the surprise of the Neosho coaching staff, Liedtke was issued a red card when the dust settled, giving Lebanon a penalty kick.
The shot went in, and the Lady Wildcats went home with a 1-1 record.
Lebanon got on the board first in the first half with a goal off a corner kick six minutes into the contest. Neosho’s Veronica Webber answered with a goal of her own to tie it just before half in the 36th minute, but Lebanon added another corner in the 38th minute to make it 2-1.
“They’re a big, physical team,” Lady Wildcats coach Steve Schnackenberg said of the Lady Yellowjackets. “In the second half I didn’t think we backed down from anything. We didn’t back down when I was afraid we would, and I’m proud of the girls for doing that. I’m pretty happy with the game, just pretty disappointed in the outcome.”
Meanwhile, the “B” teams tied 0-0.
Neosho travels to Joplin for a 4:30 p.m. tilt on Monday.
