  • After downing Mount Vernon 8-5 in a regular season game on Thursday, the McDonald County Mustangs went 1-2 in three games at the Harrison Tournament.
The Mustangs opened the Tournament on Friday with a 6-4 loss to the Harrison Goblins, before splitting Saturday with an 8-2 win over the Pleasant Hill Rooster and a 12-9 loss to Northside (Ark.).
In game one, the Mustangs led 1-0 in the third inning before the Goblins spooked them for five runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead. The Mustangs answered to make it 5-4 in the fifth, but they would draw no closer.
Cooper Underwood and Jake Wood both had two hits to lead the Mustangs’ offense, while Evan Acuff, Mason York and Zack Peck, who doubled, had a hit each. York took the loss on the mound as he struck out seven and allowed five runs in five innings. Chance Lemm struck out one in one inning of relief.
In game two, the Mustangs bounced back thanks to a solid pitching performance by Mark Hull as they pounced the Roosters 8-2. Hull went six innings to earn the victory, allowing one earned run on eight hits with six strikeouts and a walk.
Underwood, Drey Fickle and Jake Wilkie each had two hits to pace the McDonald County offense, while Zack Peck, Cooper Dill and York also had hits in the Mustang’s nine-hit attack. Fickle and Peck had a double each.
Despite scoring all nine of their runs in the first three innings, including six in the third, the Mustangs would lose out in a slugfest to Northside. The Mustangs led 9-5 after three innings, but they couldn’t make it stick as Northside answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, before piling on five in the sixth to move in front for good.
Underwood and Dill had two hits each for the Mustangs, while Peck, Wood, Fickle, York and Acuff had a hit apiece. Fickle and Acuff both doubled in the game.
The Mustangs (3-5) host Gravette (Ark.) in a regular season showdown at 5 p.m. Monday.
