First woman seeks Presidency
Victoria Woodhull--stockbroker, writer, suffrage activist--on April 2, 1870, announced to the New York Herald that she would be seeking the Presidency on the Equal Rights Ticket in the upcoming election.
Due to the Beecher scandal, Woodhull and her sister were both in jail during the election, and, although they were acquitted, Woodhull received no reported votes.
