  • The Neosho R-5 Charitable Foundation will recognize distinguished alumnus Rudy Farber, and distinguished educator Milly Stover, at their annual Excellence in Education Banquet, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday April 25 in the Neosho High School cafeteria.
Cory Daspit, member of the R-5 Charitable Foundation, said the board received several nominations for the honors and made the final decision on who to recognize.
“It is for those that have gone above and beyond to help out in the community,” Daspit said. “Board members did research based on what some of the distinguished alumni have done, and then it was selected by the board.”
Farber, a local businessman, will be recognized for the successful career he has built in his time since graduating from Neosho High School, as well as for his community support.
“We selected Mr. Farber for what he has done, for the things he has done here in the Neosho community, even after being as successful of a businessman as he is,” Daspit said.
Meanwhile, Daspit said Stover, a retired English teacher from Neosho High School, will be honored for the impact she had on her students.
“There were several other board members who actually had her as a teacher,” Daspit said. “It’s just the type of educator that she was, striving for excellence and to get the best out of every student.”
Last year, the honors went to alumna Pam Cope and former superintendent Dr. Roy Shaver.
The evening will include a meal, award presentations, and two speakers, Neosho R-5 Board of Education President Brett Day and incoming superintendent Dan Decker.
Daspit noted that the event will provide an opportunity for attendees to meet the district’s new leader.
He said the evening will also include a presentation about a new program the R-5 Charitable Foundation is launching.
“We’ve just created an R-5 Endowment fund that will allow people to make contributions to provide additional funding and resources to the school district,” Daspit said.
He said a video on the new endowment fund will be presented.
Meanwhile, the evening itself will serve as a fundraiser for the foundation.
“The banquet is the main fundraiser that the foundation has,” Daspit said. “This will allow us to secure funds to help with additional expenses that our teachers and our educators deal with each year.”
Tickets are still on sale, going for $40 apiece and $320 for a table of eight.
Daspit said there is no deadline for ticket purchase, though organizers prefer the tickets be purchased ahead of time to allow an accurate seating and meal count.
