  • GRANBY — A unique fundraiser will soon be held to help a local DECA club attend a competition in California.
East Newton DECA will be hosting the fourth annual Mr. East Newton Pageant at 7 p.m. Friday, in the East Newton High School gym. The public is invited to attend this event.
“This is a fundraiser for students to attend International DECA Competition in Anaheim, Calif., in April,” said Denise Stafford, advisor for the local club. “We will send five people to International DECA Contests in Anaheim. Those are: Rachel Stafford, Shelbey Thomlinson, Courtney Enslow, and CD Sullivan, plus myself.”
Come watch your favorite junior or senior guys strut their stuff in the swimsuit, talent, and best-dressed competition.
“There are 12 guys who will participate,” she said. “We have three judges, all women, who have specialized ballots who will judge the contestants.”
Price for admission is $5 for adults, $2 students, and Pre-K and under-free.
There will also be an “Asian Dinner” beginning at 5:30-6:30 for $5 for all ages. They will be serving fried rice, crab rangoon, egg roll, dessert, and a drink. It will be first come, first serve.
“Hmong students and their families are preparing it,” Stafford said, “DECA students and their parents will serve the food.”
The club has held other fundraisers to raise the necessary money to send the students to the competition.
“We have lots to do to raise $6,000 for this trip,” said Stafford.
As stated, this is the fourth annual event and Stafford said the response has been a “blast.”
“It has been a blast in the past to watch,” she said. “The crowd loves it and the guys, be it a little nervous to start with, love being a part of the contest. It is very successful.”
