  • The McDonald County Mustangs lost a slugfest to Kansas (Okla.) 11-10 in 10 innings in the Mickey Mantle Classic at Mickey Mantle Field on Thursday.
After falling behind 6-0 in the first inning, the Mustangs rebounded with five runs in the top of the second. The teams traded blows until the Mustangs plated a run in the top of the seventh to tie it (7-7) and send it into extras.
The Mustangs scored two in the top of the eighth to take a 9-7 lead, but Kansas responded with two of its own to tie it back up. The Mustangs again pushed ahead with a run in the ninth to make it 10-9, but Kansas again extended the game with a run in the bottom of the inning.
After failing to score in the top of the 10th, the game came to a close when Kansas walked off with a solo home run in to seal it later in the inning.
Both teams finished with 13 hits. Cooper Underwood led the Mustangs with three hits — including a home run and a double — an RBI and a run scored, while Cooper Dill, Zack Peck and Trenton Frazier each had two hits.
Evan Acuff, Jake Wood, Mason York and Drey Fickle also had hits. Peck and York both doubled in the game, while Dill recorded three RBIs. Jake Wilkie and Acuff both had two RBIs and York added another.
Mark Hull started on the mound for the Mustangs and struck out nine on eight hits and nine runs — three earned — in 7 2/3 innings. Frazier took the loss after allowing the home run with a strikeout in two innings of relief.
The Mustangs are back in action at noon today in Commerce.
