  • The Neosho girls’ soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to Hillcrest 2-1 on Friday at Hillcrest on Friday, before falling to Joplin on penalty kicks 5-4 on Saturday at the Neosho Tournament at Lions Field.
Neosho, who had five shots against the Lady Hornets, got its only goal on Friday from senior captain Paige O’Neill. Matty Liedtke, meanwhile, recorded seven saves in goal for the Lady Wildcats.
The Lady Wildcats (3-7-1) bounced back to take on Joplin in the third place game on Saturday. The game remained scoreless at the end of regulation as both teams played superb defense.
Neosho actually out-shot the Lady Eagles 8-4 in regulation, but that went out the window in the overtime period, where Joplin made all five of its attempts to win the game.
Allura Jones had three saves for the Lady Wildcats.
“I’m proud of the girls for the way they came together and played today after a really tough loss (Friday) to Hillcrest,” Neosho coach Steve Schnackenberg said.
Friday’s other results from the tournament were:
    Carthage 1, Joplin 0
    Carthage 3, Fair Grove 0
    Hillcrest 5, Webb City 0
    Joplin 2, Fair Grove 0
