  • The Crowder Roughriders completed a much-needed sweep of Region 16 foe Mineral Area on Sunday with a pair of hard-fought victories.
Crowder won game one 1-0, and game two 2-0.
In game one the Roughriders got a superb performance from pitcher Preston Tarkington, who tossed a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and one walk.
The Roughriders themselves managed just four hits against Devon Hampton, but they got the last laugh when Matt Burgess singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Mak Monckton pinch-ran for Burgess and promptly stole second base and scored on a walk-off single to center by Ty White.
Burgess, White, Lucas Feddersen and Ryan Lazo had the only hits for the Roughriders.
The Roughriders scored late in game two, as well, to earn a 2-0 victory.
Crowder (36-10, 19-3 Region 16) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth when Cody Althouse led off the inning with a double and scored on a single by Tony Sandifer to make it 1-0.
They added another run in the bottom of the seventh when Ty White singled, stole second and scored on a Lucas Feddersen single to right to make it 2-0.
Cody Jones followed Tarkington’s lead and threw seven scoreless innings on the mound where he allowed five hits, no walks and four strikeouts. Andrew Schwaab picked up the save after striking out three, walking one and yielding one hit in two innings.
Feddersen and White accounted for half of Crowder’s hit total as they each had two. Althouse and Chris Scroggins both doubled in the game, while Lazo and Sandifer both had a hit.
Crowder’s game against Connors State slated for today has been cancelled, per the school’s website.
