  • Evelyn Charlotta Killion, 99, Rocky Comfort, passed away Monday, April 22, at Golden Living Center, Anderson.
    She was born March 16, 1914, in Newton County, the daughter of Charlie H. and Lottie H. (Arfstrom) Payne.
    On Sept. 19, 1931, she was united in marriage to Charlie Killion, who preceded her in death in 1974.
    Also preceding her in death were her parents; one son, Gary Don Killion; one daughter, JoAnn Swearingen; siblings, Clyde, Selma, Alma, Earl, Ocie, and Lola Mae Payne; and one granddaughter, Kelly Dawn Killion.
    Surviving are two grandsons, Shawn Killion and his wife, Michele, Wheaton, Danny Swearingen and his wife, Renee, Monett; three granddaughters, Jennifer Bray and her husband, Jack, Centerton, Ark.; Carol Steinbach and her husband, Danny. Big Cabin, Okla., and Kristy Montz-Goble and her husband, Carl, Cassville; 15 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
    Evelyn grew up in rural Fairview, and attended school until the eighth grade in a one-room schoolhouse. As a teenager, she worked at the esteemed Big Spring Inn in Neosho for several years. After marrying Charlie, they together ran a gas station in Springfield, Mo., which also included an adjoining inn. They then settled on Indian Creek in Rocky Comfort in the 1930s, where they raised their children, grew crops, and raised livestock. "Granny" as she was affectionately known throughout the area by many, went on to maintain the farm long after her husband passed in 1974, for nearly 40 more years until her passing.
    Granny was a people person who loved serving her family, neighbors, and community. She was instrumental in the success of the Stella Senior Citizens Center, serving in every capacity from planning, to cooking, cleaning, taking the door as well as her long standing position on the board of directors for the center. Evelyn loved the Lord and was a member of Church of Christ at Rocky Comfort.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at McQueen Funeral Home, Wheaton. J.R. Burr will conduct the services. Burial will be at Dice Cemetery, Fairview.
    Contributions may be made to Stella Senior Citizens Center in memory of Evelyn.
