On Saturday, former students from four area rural schools will come together for the second annual reunion of Cave Springs, Cedar Creek, Oak Grove and Spurgeon rural school districts.
The event starts off with coffee at 8:30 a.m. at the Oak Grove Community Building, highway NN and Foliage Road, south of Joplin. On that same day, a covered dish lunch will be served at noon. All attending are asked to bring a covered dish for lunch, plates, utensils and drinks will be provided.
Preceding the lunch, a program will be held at 11 a.m.
"We are going to have the pledge of allegiance just like we use to do when we were in school," said Pat Morgan, organizer of the event. "We are going to introduce the committee. We are going to have a door prize for the one who came the furthest, and a door prize for the oldest. Then several other door prizes."
Morgan said the purpose of the event was "just to get people together, visit and have a good time."
Last year, the event drew 125 people.
Before this reunion event started last year, Morgan told the Daily News on how it all came about.
"We went to the (Newton County) courthouse and down at Kay Baum's office, they have all of the old school records," Morgan said last year. "We went through and copied all of the school records for these four schools for the year 1933, most of the schools were closed by 1963, but Oak Grove was open until I think 1965, 1966. Then they all consolidated. We took the school records home, typed them all up on a spreadsheet, then we went to look for addresses, then got out to the community. I started out with 1,400 names. We have quite a list of the deceased, which we will have displayed there, and then we sent out 250 of the notices."
Students went to the above mentioned schools up to the eighth grade and then transferred to Neosho High School to finish their education. And after the schools closed, many were used for other purposes.
"Cave Springs School is now a barn, Spurgeon School is now a house, they tore down Cedar Creek (School), well those were our three main schools, but we have Oak Grove School," she noted in a previous article.
During Saturday's event, and similar to last year, there will be displays from the four schools.
"We have more displays coming this year than last year," Morgan said. "We also have two people come and scan their old pictures into a program and then give them the information where they can go on the Internet website and get these pictures. Last year, I think that they scanned 100-some-odd pictures."
Right after lunch, former students will gather for group photographs. Times are as follows: 1 p.m. for Cave Springs, 1:30 p.m. for Cedar Creek, 2 p.m. for Oak Grove and 2:30 p.m. for Spurgeon. The photos will be taken at Oak Grove Community Building. Cost is $12 per picture, which will be mailed to the classmate.
