The Crowder Roughriders fell from No. 1 to No. 6 in the NJCAA Division I college baseball poll this week, but that hasn’t slowed their winning ways this week as they pounded North Central Community College in a doubleheader on Thursday.
The Roughriders (38-10, 21-3 Region 16) cruised 10-1 in game one and 7-0 in game two while playing well in every phase of the game.
After Ty White drove in Cody Althouse with a single in the first inning, the Roughriders entered the third in a 1-1 tie. But their offense exploded in the third as they plated six runs on four hits in the frame and added three more in the seventh to put it away.
Chris Scroggins led off the third with his second hit of the game and Tony Sandifer followed with a booming two-run homer to center to make it 3-1. Matt Burgess followed with a double to center and Ty White singled to move him to third. Two batters later Lucas Feddersen doubled to right to score Burgess and Jordan Dey unloaded a three-run homer to left to make it 7-1.
C.J. Webster hit Crowder’s third homer of the game in the seventh — a three-run blast to score Burgess and White.
The Roughriders pounded 12 hits in the game, seven of which went for extra bases. Scroggins led the team with three hits, while Burgess and White had two. Althouse, Sandifer, Webster, Feddersen and Dey also had a hit. Webster and Dey finished with three RBIs, while Sandifer had two. Both of Burgess’ hits went for doubles.
Chris Caudle earned the win on the mound as he allowed a run on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings. Cody Jones pitched two perfect innings in relief with four strikeouts.
Neosho native Tyler Marion had a hit for North Central.
The Roughriders cruised in game two behind the left arm of starter Jon Woodcock. The sophomore southpaw dominated on the hill as he allowed one hit with 13 strikeouts and no walks in six innings on the hill. Preston Tarkington tossed two perfect innings in relief with four strikeouts, and Jake Barnes walked one and allowed a hit before striking out the side in the ninth.
Matt Burgess and Chris Scroggins both homered for Crowder as Burgess collected three hits and two RBIs to pace the offense. Ty White finished with two hits, while Althouse, Scroggins, Sandifer, Feddesen, Sam May and Ryan Lazo all had hits. Scroggins had two RBIs while White and Lazo had one.
Crowder returns home this weekend where they’ll host Three Rivers Community College in a four game set, with doubleheaders slated for 1 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday. Saturday is sophomore day and all sophomores will be recognized prior to the game. Sunday, meanwhile, is Neosho Little League day where all Neosho Little League players, both softball and baseball, will be recognized between games.
