  • A pair of 6-5 losses to Jefferson College over the weekend, one of which came in the Region 16 Championship, finished the Crowder Lady ‘Riders’ season on Sunday.
After a win on Saturday, the Lady ‘Riders began play against the Lady Vikings with a 6-5 loss on Sunday morning. They came right back, however and topped Three Rivers 3-1 to advance to the championship.
Needing to top the Lady Vikings twice to win the double elimination tournament, Crowder surrendered four runs in the top of the fifth inning and lost.
The Lady ‘Riders (38-19) entered the fifth with a 3-2 lead, but Kara Ponchon doubled to drive in two runs to make it 4-3 and Jett Burkhart added another two-run double to push it to 6-3 before the Lady ‘Riders could escape the inning.
Crowder got going early and took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Jessica Neely singled to lead off the first inning and came around to score on Carson Forge’s groundout later in the inning to make it 1-0. Shyanne Nichols singled in the second and scored on an Andrea Drake double to make it 2-0.
“We had chances to score,” Crowder coach Lori Videmschek said. “We had great chances to score more runs, we just didn’t do it.”
The Lady ‘Riders were virtually without one of their main arms in Allison Tonyan, who fell ill with the flu over the weekend. The timing was terrible not only for Crowder, but also for the freshman righthander who hails from Columbia. Despite being back in her hometown, it did not treat her well. She still took the mound and gave it all she had, Videmschek said, but couldn’t make it deep into games.
“Everything’s got to go your way when you’re playing in a regional tournament,” Videmschek said. “My kids played hard and they never quit. We’ve just got to play harder in key situations.
“We had a good year. Sometimes you just feel like it’s all for nothing because you want to win that region, but it just didn’t happen.”
