Jake Wood crushed a two-run single in the top of the first to help set the tone for the McDonald County Mustangs on Wednesday as they topped Carl Junction 5-2 at Carl Junction High School.
Wood’s hit capped a three-run first for the Mustangs. Those runs turned out to be all they needed, too, as Mark Hull surrendered just two runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout to earn the win on the mound.
The Bulldogs would score both of their runs in the second, but Hull escaped a bases-loaded jam to end the inning. The Mustangs would respond with a run in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Cooper Underwood, before adding an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double by Trenton Frazier.
Underwood and Zack Peck both finished with two hits for the Mustangs, while Frazier, Wood and Evan Acuff had one apiece. Acuff drove in two runs.
The Mustangs entertain East Newton at 4:30 p.m. today.
