The East Newton Patriots sent their seniors off in style on Wednesday as they topped Lamar 15-12 in a slugfest on Senior Night at East Newton High School.
The Patriots climbed back from a 4-1 deficit with five runs in the second inning, one in the third and six in the fifth to take a 13-6 lead into the sixth. The Tigers made things interesting in the top of the sixth, however, as they were sparked by a two-run triple from Alex Francis and plated six runs in the inning to cut the deficit to 13-12.
East Newton pitcher Dillon Bunch escaped the jam, however, and Sam Swartz picked his team up with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to give the Patriots all the insurance they would need.
The home run capped a huge night for Swartz at the plate as he clubbed three hits, a double and the homer, and finished with two runs scored and seven RBIs. Wyatt Hurn and Dustin Letts each had two hits for the Patriots. Hurn doubled, scored twice and had two RBIs while Letts scored a run.
Rocky Liveoak had a hit, scored three runs and drove in two. Ryan Linton also had a hit. Paxton Hill drew four walks, stole two bases, scored twice and had an RBI. Payton Powell walked twice and scored two runs.
"A win is a win," Patriots coach Seth Johnson said. "It was a bit sloppy, we kind of had a bit of a slow start, but I'm really proud of our boys. We just stayed after it and continued to put pressure on them.
"Very proud of our seniors tonight. They've been a great bunch to coach and I'm going to miss them. Good bunch of boys."
The Patriots are at McDonald County today at 4:30 p.m.
