The No. 6 Crowder Roughriders can credit their pitching staff for a great deal of the success they’ve had this season. That success is now being recognized as, for the second week in a row, a member of the Roughriders pitching staff has been named NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Week.
The first to earn the honor is right handed sophomore Preston Tarkington, who was selected for the week of April 15-21. The Searcy, Ark., native made two appearances on the mound in that week and earned his seventh victory of the season working one game in relief and starting another. Tarkington, who is now 8-1 with a 3.06 ERA and 87 strikeouts on 17 walks in 70 2/3 innings, struck out a pair of batters in relief against Fort Scott before throwing seven scoreless innings in a 1-0 win over Mineral Area with three hits and nine strikeouts.
The award remained with the Roughriders this week as sophomore southpaw Jon Woodcock won both of his starts for the week of April 22-28.
A native of Ojai, Calif., Woodcock bested North Central Missouri 7-0 with 13 strikeouts in six innings on one hit. The sophomore later pitched five scoreless against Three Rivers with five strikeouts in a 6-0 win.
Woodcock is now 7-1 overall with a 2.26 ERA in 16 games and has allowed just 52 hits in 75 2/3 innings. Woodcock is currently second in the nation in strikeouts with 108 and has walked 18.
“Both of these guys are being honored for their individual performances,” Roughriders coach Travis Lallemand said in a prepared statement. “They have been consistent and solid for us all season and deserve the recognition.”
