  • The East Newton Patriots continued their winning ways on Thursday as they downed McDonald County 16-6 in five innings on a cold and soggy night at McDonald County High School.
The Patriots (10-8) unlocked a 4-4 tie with five runs in the top of the second inning to take a 9-4 and never looked back. They went on to score three more in the third and four in the fourth behind a potent offensive night from freshman Jacob Patterson, who went 3 for 3 with a walk, a double and five RBIs. Patterson also turned in several defensive gems.
Patterson wasn’t the only contributor on offense, however, as Rocky Liveoak crushed a homer and had three hits with two runs scored and a stolen base. Wyatt Hurn also had three hits, including a double, with two runs scored and an RBI. Ryan Linton doubled and walked three times while driving in three on a bases-clearing double in the first inning.
Paxton Hill, Sam Swartz, Dustin Letts, Cody Jordon and Dillon Bunch each had a hit.
Payton Powell started on the mound for the Patriots and earned the victory after throwing 2 1/3 innings. He handed a 9-4 lead to reliever Dillon Bunch, who fired the final 3 2/3 and allowed two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three.
The Patriots are at Neosho for their final regular season game on Thursday at Neosho at 5 p.m.
Correction: The Patriots defeated Lamar, not Nevada, as reported by the Daily News on senior night Wednesday. The Daily News regrets this mistake.
