  • NEWTONIA — An East Newton R-6 patron is organizing an informational meeting about the Common Core Standards in Missouri schools.
"It is a push button topic right now," said Jill Carter, organizer of the event. "Common Core is basically curriculum in testing and mandates that have been established by the federal government for our school district and our state. Some of the concerns are that it didn't go through the legislative process, it didn't go through our representatives, and it was signed by our governor and the state superintendents. One of the concerns is it is a federal guideline that is tied to money. A big concern is that it doesn't allow the schools the freedom to pick or choose. If you sign on to it, you don't get to pick what you want to use, it is a one-size fits all type thing, and it would take a lot of the local control out away from the school district."
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Newtonia Community Center. Carter, who has children in the school district, is encouraging parents and the public to attend.
"Stacey Shore, with the Missouri Coalition Against Common Core, will do a presentation and then there will be a question and answer session afterwards," she said. "I have questions. From what I have read, it is not something that I think is a good thing, but right now, I am trying to gather information."

"I am just trying to understand," Carter said. "It is already being implemented on our schools before we even understand what the assessments are, nobody has even seen the assessments or what it actually consists of."
