  • Trey Turner dominated on the mound and Tyler Johnson did so at the plate as the Neosho Wildcats hammered Joplin 10-1 in the Class 5, District 12 Tournament at Willard High School.
The duo led the Wildcats (14-8) as Turner struck out eight and walked one on just two hits over five innings to earn the win, while Johnson slugged three hits, including a triple, had an RBI and scored three times on offense.
“Trey threw well, our hitters looked good,” Wildcats coach Donny Pennington said. “(Johnson) had a big day for us. He’s coming around at the right time.”
The Wildcats battered Eagles ace Adam St. Peter for 10 runs on nine hits in seven innings. Tyler Johnson was the only Wildcat with three hits in the game, while Turner, Kris Finley, Jayce Parmley, Kody Kelly, Wayde Hartman and Andy Lett had a hit each.
Kelly doubled in the game and drove in a run, while Turner led the team with three RBIs and Finley had two. Chris Paullus and Lett both had an RBI.
The Wildcats got on the board first with two runs in the second. It remained 2-0 until the Wildcats exploded for five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead. The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that’s all they would get.
Lane Brodie fired two innings of relief for the Wildcats, allowing a run on a hit with a walk and a strikeout.
Neosho moves on to play Carthage in the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Willard.
