  • An alcohol sting on 25 Newton County alcohol establishments netted nearly half of them selling to a minor.
"We did an alcohol sting Friday night, between Neosho, Granby and Seneca. We did 25 stores and 10 of them failed," Newton County Chief Deputy Chris Jennings said.
The sheriff's department partnered with the Neosho Area Coalition for the sting.
"In Neosho, we did 19 locations, six of those sold to a minor: Casey's on the Boulevard, the Beverage Shoppe, Wildcat Corner, Main Stop, White Oak and C-Mart," Jennings said. "In Granby, two sold out of three, the Outer Limits and the Granby Station. In Seneca, we did three there and two sold, Darla's Liquors and Big Daddy's."
According to Jennings, the way the sting goes is "the Neosho area coalition supplies the minor, they are over 18, but not old enough to buy alcohol, it is people that they have as volunteers. We supply officers and money, we send them to all of the different locations. They are either able to buy or not. If they are not able to buy alcohol, and they are properly carded, great. If they sell alcohol, they bring the alcohol out to the officers, the officers will immediately go in and cite the clerk or whoever did the sell for selling alcohol to a minor. Then they will go to court."
Asked if he was surprised at the outcome, Jennings said, "That is a little more than I thought that it would be, as far as the amount of stores. Usually, that is a little higher than we usually have, I believe."
