Roy Eugene Self, 80, Neosho, died May 25, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mo., following a sudden illness.
Mr. Self was born Oct. 15, 1932, in Port Arthur, Texas, the son of Joseph Charles and Estella Susan (Chaddick) Self.
He served in the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Vietnam and Korean Conflicts, retiring after 21 years as first sergeant with a rank of master sergeant. He bred Quarter Horses, Appaloosa and Paint Horses and trained cutting horses and had worked as superintendent at Southwest Lime. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, District 7 and was past commander. Roy married Elizabeth Anne Duncan on Feb. 16, 1956 and she survives.
He is also survived by a daughter, Deborah Zasadny and husband, Dennis, St. George, Utah; three sons, Roy E. Self, II 'Bud,' Garland, Texas; Charles Self and wife, Rhonda, Neosho and Mark Self and wife, Shelly, Aubrey, Texas; grandchildren, Andy Zasadny, Stacey Zasadny, Misty Self, Jessica Tallman, Kaci Self, Zackery Self and Cheyenne Self; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Charles Ray Self and Joe Wayne Self.
