  • Donald J. McCleary, 84, Neosho, entered into rest on June 9, 2013, at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, following a short illness.
    He was born July 15, 1928 in Newton County, to John Henry and Ida Mae (Martin) McCleary.
    Don spent his entire life in Newton County except for a brief six years in Turlock, Calif. He was a diversified businessman having started Don’s Shop in 1951 and over the years made it a top selling chainsaw and mower dealership. He earned many top awards and in the early 1960s became a Honda motorcycle dealer. In the mid 1960s he opened a second dealership; Don and Jim’s Shop in Joplin. During that same time period he established Neosho Fiberglass, which manufactures motorcycle accessories. In 1970 he established Don’s Trucking and then in 2011 established Starlite Trailers and Trikes, in Joplin. Don was part of the Newton County Sheriff’s Posse, was an avid fisherman and hunter, and loved to play pool. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
    Don married Pearl Davison on June 22, 1947, in Granby, and she survives.
    He is also survived by his children: Ron McCleary and wife, Jan, Independence, Mo., Kathy Lee and husband, Gregg, Neosho; grandchildren, Erin, Heather, Sarah, Chris; great-grandchildren, Maverick, Marshall, Kenzi, Hagen.
    Don was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers; and sisters. 
    Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, at Clark Funeral Home Chapel Of Memories, Neosho; Don Deffenbaugh and Denny Kruse officiating. Interment will be in Granby Memorial Cemetery, Granby. Visitation will be 5 -7 p.m. Wednesday, at Clark Funeral Home Neosho.
