  • After a seven-month hiatus, the City of Neosho's position of parks and recreation director is coming back.
The position became vacant in November 2012, when the former parks director, John Jordon, resigned and the city opted not to fill the position.
"We got into the off season and just didn't feel like we needed to fill it at that point," said City Manager Troy Royer.
At the time, the duties of the parks and recreation director were split between the city's director of development services, the parks supervisor, and the parks manager.
However, Royer said with the busiest time of year underway for the parks department, it became time for the city to rearrange the responsibilities, and once again fill the budgeted position.
"There's just a lot in parks," Royer said. "It was OK through the winter, but now we're in the really busy season for parks and I just want to make sure we're being as efficient as we possibly can."
Royer said the parks department hires several part-time, seasonal employees in the summer, while the winter season usually only requires the work of the department's full-time staff members.
The position was posted on the city's website on Thursday and listed as open until filled.
According to the job description, the parks and recreation director's duties include planning, developing, scheduling, directing, implementing and evaluating the city-wide parks and recreation program year round, preparing the department's annual budget and ensuring fiscal viability of all department programs and facilities.
The parks and recreation director reports to the city manager, and supervises all full and part-time staff responsible for sports, park and recreation activities, as well as an administrative assistant.
