The new school year is still more than a month away, but it isn't too early for parents needing a little help preparing their children for the upcoming school year to sign up to receive assistance.
Abundant Life Church is hosting their annual We Care Fair Saturday, Aug. 3, with registration set to begin Monday.
Brenda Johnson, We Care Fair organizer, said the registration is necessary for children to be guaranteed school supplies at the fair.
Those not registered are also welcome to show up to the We Care Fair, though they will have to select their supplies from what is remaining.
"We'll take as many as we can," Johnson said. "And the ones that pre-register are the ones that we'll have school supplies for. If they don't pre-register they aren't guaranteed to get school supplies, it's just whatever's left."
Registration is free and runs from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, July 8 through Friday, July 12, and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Abundant Life Church, 700 Spencer Drive.
Johnson said registration must be done in person, though the children do not have to be present at the time.
The only information needed to register is the child's name, grade in school and address.
Johnson said there is no limit to how many children an adult can register, and that the fair is open to all students in Newton and McDonald Counties.
While the pre-registration ensures school supplies for the student, the We Care Fair offers much more to the students than pencils and paper.
In addition to school supplies, the fair will include jeans, coats, shoes, socks and books.
Students in attendance will also be able to get a free haircut, and vision, dental and hearing screenings.
The day also includes some fun for the children, with a petting zoo and bounce house planned, and vendors with snacks expected to set up as well.
Johnson said the We Care Fair was started by the church five years ago.
"We just saw that there was a need in the community and so we started it," Johnson said. "We served close to 1,200 last year."
School supplies offered at the event come from the Neosho Bright Futures Stuff the Bus event, held the Saturday before the fair, as well as from community donations.
Johnson said several community churches, businesses and organizations also help out with the event.
