  • Missouri Slammers headed to World Series

  • The Missouri Slammers, a 14-under girl’s fastpitch traveling softball team, won the Missouri B state championship for the second year in a row last weekend, effectively punching a ticket to the 14-under World Series in Lawrence, Kan., next week.

  • The Missouri Slammers, a 14-under girl’s fastpitch traveling softball team, won the Missouri B state championship for the second year in a row last weekend, effectively punching a ticket to the 14-under World Series in Lawrence, Kan., next week.
    The team, which is currently ranked No. 1 in Missouri in power rankings, is made up of players from East Newton, Seneca, Diamond, Purdy, Joplin, Carthage and Wheaton. Local players are Taylor Mathis and Ellie White (East Newton), Payton Clouse and Macy Van Dorn (Seneca), Macie Seward (Diamond), as well as Sam House and Rion Boyd (Purdy), Cortney Krolman and Courtney Shyrock (Joplin), Savannah Downing (Carthage) and Karlee Mason (Wheaton). The team is coached by head coach Shane Mathis and assistants Jason White, Bob Shyrock and Bill House.
    The Slammers wrapped up the five-game series by winning the state championship game 10-0 behind a home run from Krolman and a walk-off single by Boyd. Mason was the winning pitcher in the title game while Mathis recorded two victories on the mound in the series.  
    The team is currently 20-3 this season against teams in the 14-under B group, and has rattled off wins in both the 18-under and 16-under classifications.
