In a tournament that keeps growing each season, some 50 teams have descended upon the four-state area this week for the Premier Baseball Junior World Series. A chunk of those teams will pass through Neosho and Seneca this week, too, as Crowder College and the Seneca Baseball/Softball Complex will host games throughout the week.

In a tournament that keeps growing each season, some 50 teams have descended upon the four-state area this week for the Premier Baseball Junior World Series. A chunk of those teams will pass through Neosho and Seneca this week, too, as Crowder College and the Seneca Baseball/Softball Complex will host games throughout the week.

In its ninth year in Joplin, the Premier World Series, which brings some of the best high school prospects and best teams in the nation to the area, will feature 160 games played at 10 ballparks across three states. The field has continued to grow over the years, as the field this season consists of 50 teams, up from 46 in 2012.

The field of teams include 27 teams from Texas, eight from Missouri, three from New York, two from Indiana and Arkansas and one each from Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.

Games will be played at Crowder College in Neosho as well as Seneca, Home Thomas Field, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Baseball Field in Miami, Okla., Mickey Mantle Field in Commerce, Okla., Field of Dreams in Baxter Springs, Kan., Jaycee Ballpark and Al Ortolani Field in Pittsburg, Kan., Wendell Redden Stadium and Joe Becker Stadium in Joplin, and Joe Pollock Stadium in Miami, Okla.

Games begin locally at 10 a.m. this morning and continue until 7:30 p.m. The first two days of the World Series consist of pool play, with games on Friday and Saturday featuring a seeded field of 1-32 and 33-50 for both a championship pool and consolation pool.

Quarterfinal action of the championship bracket will be played at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at four locations, with Sunday’s action featuring a championship and consolation bracket semifinal at Joe Becker Stadium and Jaycee Ballpark. Championship games are slated for 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

There are plenty of highlights in this tournament. Along with some of the top talent in the nation on hand, there are also a host of former major league players coaching this season, including Mike Bacsik, Scott Ruffcorn, Shane Nance, Clint Zavaras, Tim Mauser, Billy Brewer and Terry Tiffee, among others.

Other highlights will include a celebration of the 100th anniversary of historic Joe Becker Stadium in Joplin. Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. game between Houston Kyle Chapman and the Midwest Nationals will be Throwback Jersey Night. Kyle Chapman will wear replica Joplin Miners shirts, while the Nationals will wear replica Baxter Springs Whiz Kids shirts.
