  • FAIRVIEW — The Fairview All School Reunion will be held during the third Saturday of August, Aug. 17.
The event includes a noon meal which will cost $10 a person and catered privately, as well as a time for former students of any Fairview School class to reunite. The reunion will be held at the John Q. Hammons Community Center, Fairview. In the past, former classmates have started to show up around 10 a.m. to visit with one another.
“Just everybody wants to get together again,” said Mary Ann Hill, secretary/treasurer of the reunion committee. “Every year, we vote to have it another year. This is an unusual deal, I don’t know of any other school that does this in this area.”
Fairview School’s first graduating class was in 1923 and the last graduating class was in 1964 prior to it consolidating with the East Newton School District.
During the Fairview school days, there were two school buildings on the campus. One burnt in 1939 while the other one still stands, and is located about a block south of the current community center. Fairview School had grades first through the 12th, with various class sizes.
Hill encourages the former classmates to bring class photographs, class rings, and class pins, basically anything they want to share with their classmates.
During the noon meal, the 50th class reunion will be recognized, with this year being the class of 1963. Also, they will honor the classes who are celebrating their 60th and 70th class reunions.
Hill graduated from Fairview High School in 1954.
Asked what she remembers from the school and the town when she was there, Hill said, “I think that the closeness of everybody, even the parents and grandparents.”
In the past, one of Fairview’s famous graduates – John Q. Hammons – came back to give a speech. However, Hammons died earlier this year. Hill noted that someone is working on a memorial of Hammons.
For more information about the upcoming reunion, contact Hill at 632-4922 or 825-1738.
In addition to this event, the Fabulous 50s Reunion will be meeting for dinner at 6 p.m., also on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Hammons Community Center, Fairview. For more information, call Mary Huffman at 638-5368. Also, RSVP to Huffman by Aug. 7 if you are planning on attending.
