DIAMOND — Bree Cornett dazzled on the mound and Seneca’s offense set the tone early as the Lady Indians defeated Diamond 9-3 in the varsity softball season opener at Diamond High School on Wednesday.

Cornett went the distance on the hill for the Lady Indians and earned the victory after holding Diamond to three runs on three hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings.

Meanwhile, Seneca’s offense gave her all the support she’d need in the first three innings as they scored twice in the first, three times in the second and twice more in the third to grab a 7-1 lead. They added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and finished the game with 11 hits.

Willow Rhoades led the Lady Indians with three hits. Bailey Durbin and Bailey Skelton both doubled and finished with two hits in the win while Cornett, Mirana Heath and Kaylee Wolfinbarger also had a hit.

Hanna Million collected two of Diamond’s three hits, including a booming homer to lead off bottom of the second to make it 5-1. Macie Seward accounted for Diamond’s third hit.

Diamond entertains College Heights at 4:30 p.m. today.
