  • The McDonald County Lady Mustangs kicked off their regular season with a pointed 14-0 victory over the Neosho Lady Wildcats in five innings at the Neosho Softball Field on Thursday.
The Lady Mustangs offense set the tone early as Macie Jones clubbed a grand slam in the top of the first inning to make it 4-0. Starting pitcher Kali Hodson helped her own cause in the second with a three-run shot to quickly make it 7-0 on two swings. They went on to score three more in the third and four in the fifth.
Hodson, meanwhile, earned the win after allowing three hits and striking out three over three innings. Cheyanne Chappie tossed the final two innings and allowed a hit on three strikeouts.
Jones finished with four hits and six RBIs. Hodson had three hits and four RBIs. Courtni Smith had two doubles. Ashton Harmon and Kelsy Reynolds had a hit and an RBI apiece and Stormy Christerson added a double.
“I was pretty happy with the way they played,” Lady Mustangs coach Tray Shaddox said of his team. “I did not have our defense down for an error and our pitching was great.”
Katie Cholka, Danielle Forkner, Kylie Bach and Deanna Bingham all had hits for the Lady Wildcats.
Both teams begin play at the Joplin Tournament today. The Lady Mustangs (1-0) open against Carthage at 10 a.m. before taking on Nevada at 11:45 a.m. and Park Hill South at 3 p.m. Neosho, meanwhile, opens the day against Webb City at 11:45 a.m.
The Lady Mustangs also won the B game 6-0.
