The Blue Springs South boys swimming and diving team wasted no time in sending some of its members to state.
The Jaguars qualified for state in four events and a relay team set a freshman school record in the season-opening SouthRock Invitational Saturday at the Blue Springs Family YMCA.
South finished third behind Rockhurst and Park Hill in the team standings with 431 points. Lee’s Summit North was fourth at 348.
Connor Gregston qualified for state in the 50-yard freestyle with his win in 22.48 seconds. He also helped the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay teams to wins and state berths.
Gregston teamed with Dominic Baber, Jack Pluenneke and Connor Dillon to qualify in the 200 relay in 1 minute, 32.17 seconds and the 400 relay in 3:23.09. Gregston also took fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:20.58).
Diver Eric Horn also punched his ticket to state by taking second in the six-dive event with a score of 224.85 points, finishing behind only Rockhurst’s David Knopke (272.30).
The South freshman relay of Ben Morgan, Jake Workman, Kyle Hepting and Nick Keller set the freshman school record with a time of 1:42.22.
Also recording top-five finishes for South were Dillon in the 200 freestyle (third, 1:52.15) and 500 freestyle (third, 5:20.64); Pluenneke in the 200 backstroke (second, 2:03.66); James Poole in diving (fourth, 202.65); Workman in the 100 butterfly (fifth, 1:05.68); Chris Branch in the 500 freestyle (fourth, 5:23.55); and the 200 medley relay team of Morgan, Hepting, Garret Edwards and Stephen Ivey (fifth, 1:54.65) Thomas Reilly (1,000 freestyle, 10:33.18), Josh Littell (200 freestyle, 1:51.57, and 200 butterfly, 2:02.84) and Ethan Bresette (200 breaststroke, 2:12.14) all recorded second-place finishes to lead Lee’s Summit North.
