  • Tuesday couldn’t have gone much better for the Crowder soccer team.
Facing rival Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, the Roughriders scored a goal two minutes into regulation and made it stand as they went on to defeated the Norsemen 1-0 at Roughrider Soccer Field. It was also Kick it to Cancer awareness night, and the team managed to raise several hundred dollars toward cancer research.
“It was a good day,” Roughriders coach Brad Smith, a cancer survivor, said. “Every year we do a Kick it to Cancer game, sell some t-shirts and try to raise some money for research and to make everyone aware of it. We think it’s a good cause.
“Anytime you can do that and then also win your rivalry game you have to feel good about it.”
Another positive for the Roughriders was the return of a couple of starters they’d been missing in the here in the early stages of the season, including sophomore Ousmane Ba, who got 10-15 minutes on the pitch Tuesday.
“That’s huge for us,” Smith said. “Brantley Gossett was sitting out with a red card, so we’ll get him back now. Jose Valdez is nursing an injury and hopefully he’ll be back Saturday or early next week. We’re plugging along.”
The Roughriders scored the only goal of the game two minutes into regulation when Joe Rice cleaned up a deflection off the post and deposited it into the back of the net. Roughriders keeper Gustav Kennestig made it stand by pitching the shutout in goal with three saves. Crowder finished with four shots on goal. The Roughriders dominated the possession game, but somehow amassed only four shots on goal.
“The bottom line is we got a goal early and hung on for 88 minutes,” Smith said. “I thought the kids hung in there pretty well and worked hard. By no means was it pretty.”
The Roughriders (5-5) entertain St. Charles Community College in a Region 16 game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
