  • The City of Neosho rededicated the Big Spring steps Wednesday afternoon.
The renovation project was just recently completed. Neosho-based Construction Services Group was the contractor. Total cost of the project, including engineering, was $45,865.
The project included a concrete overlay of the 57 steps and three landings that connect Big Spring Hill with High Street, as well as a new railing on either side of the staircase. The steps were originally poured in 1923 and replaced a wooden flight that had existed since the 1800s on the same site. The top of the staircase provides an overlook of historic downtown Neosho.
"I could not be happier of how this turned out, much better than I would have ever anticipated," Neosho Mayor Richard Davidson said. "It took a lot of effort, we had to work to find the money, but seeing now what we have, and the work that was done, and the beauty of these steps, I am so proud of it. I look forward to having these steps be part of Neosho history for many, many decades to come."
There have been several groups who helped with the project including a third grade — now, fourth grade —class at South Elementary, the Neosho chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Fortnightly Study Club, and the Flowerbox City Newcomers Club.
After the ribbon cutting ceremony, those in attendance were encouraged to walk up the new stairs and look over Neosho.
