  • The Lee’s Summit North girls tennis team, as it did in the Suburban Big Six this season, dominated the Class 2 District 14 individual tournament Friday.
The Broncos claimed three of the four state sectional playoff berths in Friday’s tournament at North. Blue Springs South claimed the other berth as Leah Bell claimed second in the singles bracket.
North, which won the team district tournament earlier this week, finished 1-2 in doubles, qualifying both for individual sectionals 4 p.m. Tuesday at Lee’s Summit West High School. Logan Morrisey and Camryn Parnell downed teammates Vilune Sestokaite and Alyson Moore 6-2, 6-1 in the doubles championship.
“We were very pleased with how the girls competed today,” Broncos coach Stu Reece said. “Their success in the regular season put them in a good position (as far as seedings), but you still have to step onto the court and play. Jenny was nearly perfect today. She was playing her game and made very few errors. Both of the doubles teams played up to their potential and met in the finals in a match that was much closer than the score indicated.”
In the singles final, North’s Jenny Krause topped Bell 6-0, 6-1.
Jaguars coach Jakob Estep was happy for Bell.
“Leah Bell came out here focused today,” Estep said. “She had a goal of going to sectionals and no one was going to get in her way. I couldn't be more proud of her. Great way to extend a great season.”
Blue Springs South’s doubles teams of Remy and Tiffany Davenport and Emily Conaty and Erica McClain both fell in the semifinals to North’s teams. Sestokaite and Moore stopped the Davenports 6-3, 6-0, while Morrissey and Parnell downed Conaty and McClain 6-0, 6-0. The Davenports beat Conaty and McClain 8-6 in the third-place match.
“Both of our doubles teams played good tennis today,” Estep said. “They both faced Lee’s Summit North giants in the semifinals though and weren't able to overcome them.”
Bell beat North’s Beta Lear 6-2, 6-3 to reach the finals. Krause stopped Talia Yeager of Blue Springs 6-0, 6-1 in her semifinal. Lear topped Yeager 8-4 in the third-place match. Blue Springs’ Mihaela Evans took fifth, topping South’s Bella Bowling 8-6.
