  • LANAGAN — A Lanagan man took his own life Saturday after a three-hour standoff with law enforcement agents.
Michael Hall, McDonald County sheriff, said the county's 911 center received a call from the Crisis Hotline, which said they had been contacted by a man threatening he was going to take his life.
Hall said it was determined the caller lived in the Lanagan area. Working with the Lanagan Police Department, the sheriff's department located the house, then called in the Special Response Team, as the man was threatening to kill himself with a gun.
"After more than three hours of talking with the subject, the SRT team was sent into the residence," Hall said in a prepared statement. "Upon entry to the house, they made contact with the subject and he fired a shot at the first SRT member and hit the ballistic shield. That SRT team member returned one shot and missed. The suicidal subject then took his own life."
The Missouri State Highway Patrol was called in to investigate, as a member of the SRT team fired a shot.
"I believe that the investigation will show that the team member was justified in firing back after being fired upon," Hall said.
The man's name was not released.
