  • McDonald County held an early first quarter lead, but Nevada stormed back with 33 unanswered points to defeat the Mustangs 39-7 on Friday at Nevada High School.
Trailing 6-0 early in the first quarter, the Mustangs (0-8) took the lead when quarterback Jake Wood hit Cooper Underwood on a 40-yard touchdown strike to make it 7-6. The Tigers responded with a pair of touchdowns to take a 19-7 lead into the half.
“We played pretty hard, but made way too many mistakes again,” Mustangs coach Chris Gwartney said.
Indeed, mistakes cost the Mustangs on a rain-soaked night. A mishandled punt gave the Tigers the ball at the Mustangs five, and they promptly punched it in for a touchdown. On another occasion, the Mustangs marched to Nevada’s nine before throwing an interception to thwart a drive in the second quarter.
Having recently switched to a spread offense, one that has allowed the Mustangs to move the ball with more efficiency of late, Friday’s weather was not a welcome sight for a team that emphasizes running the option and throwing the football.
“It wasn’t pouring down rain, but it was a steady, light rain and it rained the whole game,” Gwartney said. “It had a little bit of an effect. We had a couple of times there running the option where it kind of slipped out of our hands. We had a couple of bad snaps. It bothered us a little bit.”
Gwartney says his team has turned its attention to Springfield Central and the final regular season game before districts at home this week.
“We’re going to continue to play hard and improve,” he said. “We’ve just got to get over the hump one of these days. We just need a win. (Central) hasn’t won very many games either, so it’s going to be one of those where either team can win.”
