  • A second person has been charged in an assault that happened Oct. 30 in Joplin.
The Newton County Prosecutor’s Office has filed first-degree assault charges against Samuel J. Hughes, 24, of Joplin. Hughes was arrested Nov. 1 and later transported to the Newton County Jail.
Hughes pleaded not guilty during an arraignment Monday before Newton County Division II Associate Circuit Court Judge Greg Stremel. A pretrial conference has been set for Nov. 19.
According to Lt. Matt Stewart with the Joplin Police Department, Diamond resident Mark A. Thomas remains at large. A warrant has been issued for his arrest with a $100,000 cash-only bond set. Those with information on his whereabouts are asked to contact the Joplin Police Department at (417) 623-3131 or your local law enforcement agency.
Joplin police responded to a disturbance call at about 1:35 a.m. Oct. 31 at 3216 Grand Ave. in Joplin. Upon arrival, they found Amy Denney, 29, with serious head injuries. She was taken to Freeman West Hospital for treatment, and remains in critical condition, Stewart said. Hughes resides in an apartment at 3216 Grand Ave.
Thomas is currently on probation for unlawful possession of a firearm charge, a Class C felony, and possession of a controlled substance, also a Class C felony.
Thomas plead guilty to both of the earlier charges.
He received five years of supervised probation, with a suspended five-year prison sentence.
    His probation began Feb. 11.
