  • Jeffrey L. Bruner has pleaded not guilty to killing Missouri Southern assistant football coach Derek Moore.
Bruner entered the plea Thursday morning during an arraignment held in Jasper County Circuit Court. Division V Associate Circuit Court Judge Richard Copeland presided. Bruner made the plea via a video conference and remains in the Jasper County Jail. He is represented by Darren K. Wallace, a public defender based out of Carthage.
Bruner is accused of killing Moore outside of the Joplin Northstar 14 theater on Nov. 1. The Joplin Police Department said Bruner, who was estranged from his wife, confronted Moore and the woman outside of the theater, then shot the assistant football coach.
“Mr. Moore fell to the ground and witnesses stated that Mr. Bruner fired more rounds after Mr. Moore was on the ground,” JPD Lt. Matt Stewart said in a prepared statement.
Bruner then allegedly went to his car and placed his firearm inside. Witnesses helped detain Bruner until the police arrived. Bruner was then taken into custody without further incident.
Bruner will be back in court on Nov. 27 for a hearing.
