  • After falling into an early hole, the Neosho Lady Wildcats came alive in the second quarter and never looked back as they downed Joplin, 58-39, on Tuesday at Missouri Southern State University.
It certainly wasn’t the start the Lady Wildcats had hoped for when Joplin grabbed a 9-2 lead right out of the gate. Perhaps the jolt awakened Neosho a bit, however, as the Lady Wildcats closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run to tie it 9-9.
That run certainly turned the tide, as the Lady Wildcats outscored Joplin 18-7 in the second quarter and never trailed again.
“We got off to a slow start,” Lady Wildcats coach Lance Robbins said. “Once we got settled in and started taking better care of the basketball, we got on a run. We came out in the second half and continued to play well, had some kids step up and hit some big jumpers. We’re getting closer to where we want to be.”
The Lady Wildcats did most of their heavy lifting inside as Morgan Rogers and Chelsey Henry both had strong games inside the paint. Rogers led the team with 20 points and Henry added 16. Also scoring was Brooke Stauffer and Emily Harrell with six points each, Skyelar Long and Addi Long with four each and Sydney Linny with two.
Depite spending most of the first half in foul trouble, Joplin’s Bailey Taylor scored all 14 of her points in the second half to lead the team. Marissa Queen, Kelsey Johnson and Sam Stout scored six each, while Naomi Alexander turned in five and Lexy Sohosky added two.
Neosho (2-0) is at Marshfield at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Neosho also won the B game, 41-25. Skyelar Long and Linny paced Neosho’s offense with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
