  • The Neosho ninth grade basketball team is off to quite a start this season.
Playing in the Strafford Junior Varsity Tournament, the Wildcats brought home third place after edging Springfield Catholic’s JV, 54-53, on Wednesday at Strafford High School.
With time running out in regulation, the Wildcats, who trailed by as many as five points in the second half, trailed 53-52 when Ethan Siler sank a basket with nine seconds left to make it 54-53. Catholic then drove for the final shot, but the Wildcats came up with a defensive stop to preserve the victory.
After failing to score in the first half, Siler was red-hot in the second half and scored 10 of his team-high 14 points in the fourth quarter. Coleman Scott finished with 13, while Connor Johnson added three, Jon Moser four, Colton Marion eight, Bryce Murphy nine and Garett Weber three.
Cameron Guse led Catholic with 14 points.
The win improved the Wildcats to 6-1 overall. They’ll entertain Parkview at 5 p.m. Friday.
