  • The Crowder Lady ‘Riders are still in search of their first victory of 2014 after falling to Independence 57-52 at Bob Sneller Gymnasium on Saturday.
The game remained close the entire way — Independence led 27-23 at halftime — but the Lady Pirates managed to stay in front by taking advantage of the Lady ‘Riders on the offensive glass. Rebounding struggles have plagued the Lady ‘Riders throughout the season, and Saturday was no different. They weren’t helped by the fact they’ve been without freshman Mariana Silva, who has been battling injury, in the early stages either.
Crowder also had stretches where it struggled to put the ball in the basket on Saturday. The Lady ‘Riders shot just 20 percent from the floor in the first half.
“We lost it because we didn’t box out,” Crowder coach Tina Robbins said. “Plain and simple. We gave up tons of offensive rebounds for second chance points, and that was obviously the difference in the game. It didn’t help that we didn’t shoot the ball very well either.”
Jasmine Martindale had a big game for the Lady Pirates with 19 points. Deja Robinson netted 14 points.
Ariana Gallegos has a solid showing for the Lady ‘Riders, scoring 15 points in the loss. Thays Barbosa, Courtney Jones and Tae’lor Monroe netted seven each, while Dorian Briggs and Tiffany Rhame turned in six and Katie Hughes and Lori Kleier finished with two.
The Lady ‘Riders (6-10) entertain Seminole in a makeup game at 6 p.m. Monday at Bob Sneller Gymnasium.
