  • East Newton High School ag students heard from Steve Brier of Murphy-Brown LLC, of Nevada, Mo., on Monday, about the topic, “Modern Animal Agriculture & Pork Production.”
“We talked about how the pork industry has changed over the years,” said Brier. “How to grow food and a lot of the major changes has been in genetics, nutrition, and putting pigs inside and what that has meant for the pigs and just help people understand that better.”
Brier’s speech started at 8:20 a.m. and the last program was at 1 p.m. at the high school’s ag department.
Brier told the students pork is the world’s most popular meat.
“We actually export 27 percent of pork that is raised in the United States today,” he said. “There are going to be more people in the world and we are going to have to increase food production and we hope that pork is a big part of that.”
In response to an audience member’s question, Brier said there are currently 7 billion people on Earth, with that number expected to increase to 9.3 billion by 2050, according to a United Nations estimate.
“And we are going to need 100 percent more food,” he said.
