  • NEWTONIA — An Exeter school bus and a tractor-trailer unit collided at 4 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 86, near Newtonia.
“We were en route for Joplin for an academic bowl with Thomas Jefferson (Independent School),” said Ernest Raney, superintendent of Exeter School District. “Ten (high school) students were onboard of the bus with one sponsor. The bus driver reported that the oncoming tractor-trailer, traveling eastbound, crossed the centerline. The bus driver slowed, moved over on the shoulder rumble strip to avoid a head-on collision. As a result, the only damage that incurred was the bus mirrors and windows along the side of the bus, no injuries were sustained, and paramedics examined all passengers, found no injuries.”
Raney said that school officials informed all of the students’ parents immediately after the accident.
“Exeter School District dispatched another bus to go and pick up the students, deliver them back to school,” he said. “We didn’t make the tournament. We were so glad to see that everybody was OK.”
Raney said there was no impact but a jolt, and seven windows of the bus were put out by debris.
“We can certainly replace those (mirrors and windows), we can’t replace our kids,” Raney said.
The bus was driven back to the school.
