  • Connie Langum, ranger at Wilson Creek National Battlefield, and Al O’Bright, historical architect with the National Park Service, were at the Old Newtonia Civil War Cemetery Thursday giving advice on repairing damaged tombstones.
Eight members of the Newtonia Battlefields Protection Association were on hand during their visit.
Thirteen different tombstones were damaged by vandals last fall and Langum and O’Bright offered their advice on ways of repair to them and other stones which are deteriorating because of time.
Besides repair advice, the group also discussed ways to raise funds for the upkeep of the cemetery. The battlefield group is soliciting donations for a special restoration fund and also looking for photographs or information about the Civil War Cemetery and those buried there.
Anyone wanting to help, may contact any member of the group or the president, Larry James, or treasurer, Tom Higdon.
