Organizers with the annual Safe Kids Day are gearing up for the Friday event.

Co-sponsored by the Newton County Health Department and the Jasper/Newton Counties Safe Kids Coalition, it will be held from 3-5 p.m. at the health department, 812 W. Harmony St. Neosho. It is open to all area children and their parents.

“The purpose is to just to help reduce injuries in children up to the age of 12,” said Pam Link, WIC coordinator with the health department.
There will be safety demonstrations, kid’s games, activities, lots of prizes and freebies.

“We will be having fingerprint and photo IDs,” she said. “The photo ID is the thing that has a charge: a dollar. We hope to have a lot of other booths and other things. We have a lot of organizations that are participating in the event.”

There is no charge for most activities. Area police, firemen, ambulance, many businesses and organizations will be participating in the event.
Link said there would also be a petting zoo as well.

“One of the things that we are going to be focusing on — besides the seatbelt and car seat safety, fire safety and bike safety — is crib safety,” Link said. “We will have a little bit of focus on that. Also on natural disasters, how to be prepared. We try to educate the parents with that.”

There will be information available parents can take with them.

Link said attendance in past years has been good.

“We have stayed busy the whole time,” she said. “Hopefully this time, too.”
There will also be door prizes and a silent auction for a La-Z-Boy chair.
“We will have drawings every 30 minutes for some bigger prizes: a family pool pass for the Neosho Pool, a three month membership at the YMCA, tickets for Silver Dollar City and a gas card.”
