  • Volunteers needed for fishing event

  • Roaring River State Park officials are putting out the call for adult volunteers; and sounding the alarm for young anglers in the area to be prepared to answer the call for the fun that awaits them at Kids’ Fishing Day, on Saturday, May 17.
Paul Spurgeon, hatchery manager, encourages volunteers to help the kids in a variety of ways.
“We’ll have volunteers on hand to set the poles up for trout, and help them if anyone needs help learning how to fish,” said Spurgeon. “We need volunteers to help teach kids to fish, or tie on hooks — that kind of thing — and to pass out bait. We also need volunteers to man the information tables, fish weighing — that kind of stuff — so there’s plenty of opportunity to help the kids, or we have jobs for them inside the tent, too.”
Spurgeon hopes to attract around 100 volunteers — you do not need to be an experienced angler — and he added that they are always on the lookout for new volunteers.
“So we really need people to come out and say they will help us,” he said.
A volunteer lunch will be served to those who help out during the day.
If you would like to help out for Kids’ Fishing Day, Spurgeon asks that you call the Roaring River Hatchery at 417-847-2430, or email: paul.spurgeon@mdc.mo.gov.
Spurgeon said children age 15 and under who participate in Kids’ Fishing Day will be treated to free hot dogs, chips and soda from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Spurgeon said kids will receive a free trout tag, and will fish in a reserved section of the park that will be stocked several times during the day.
He said about 30 information stations and seminars will be provided to teach the kids - and their parents and older children – various aspects of the outdoors; and all kids attending at least three classes will be entered into a drawing for prizes.
Fishing begins at 6:30 a.m. and concludes at 8:15 p.m. More information about Kids’ Fishing Day on May 17 at Roaring River State Park near Cassville will be forthcoming in the Neosho Daily News.
