  • Carl Junction scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as the Bulldogs edged McDonald County, 5-3, in a varsity baseball tilt at McDonald County High School on Friday.
    A two-run single by Zachary Beyer in the top of the first capped the Bulldogs’ big inning. The Mustangs countered with a run in the third on a Jamie Hanke single to score Trenton Frazier. They added another run in the fourth when Evan Acuff brought home Emitt Dalton on a sacrifice fly. Their final run came in the sixth when Acuff doubled with one out and scored on a fielder’s choice by Cooper Underwood.
    Hanke led the Mustangs with three hits, while Underwood, Frazier, Dalton, Trevor Young, Acuff and Dakota Stites all had hits. Underwood, Hanke and Acuff each drove in a run.
    Mark Hull took the loss despite a solid performance on the mound for the Mustangs. He scattered nine hits over seven innings while allowing five runs (four earned) with four strikeouts and no walks. Beyer got the win for Carl Junction after allowing three runs on nine hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and three walks.
    The Mustangs host Joplin at 5 p.m. Monday.
