  • For 12 hours, a total of nine teams will walk around the McDonald County High School football field/track to raise money and awareness about cancer during the annual McDonald County Relay For Life.
The event starts at 6 p.m. today and concludes at 6 a.m. Saturday.
Patty Johnson, event chair, said the purpose of “Heroes For A Cure” was to raise money in the fight against cancer and to provide services to those currently battling cancer.
“The entire community is invited to come out and support us and help us fight cancer,” she said.
This year’s monetary goal is $28,000.
“Right after the opening ceremony, we’ll honor our survivors with a Survivors’ Lap, followed by a caregiver lap to recognize the caregivers,” said Johnson. “During the luminaria ceremony, we’ll honor those who have fought and won or are fighting the fight as well as remember those we’ve lost. We’ll have a ‘Fight Back Ceremony’ during the night where participants will pledge to continue to fight cancer in a variety of ways.”
Johnson said they are pleased to hold this Relay.
“Our group of volunteers this year is a little smaller than in the past, but everyone has worked extremely hard to make sure this event is a success and an opportunity for the entire community to come out and have some fun while helping fight cancer,” she said. “We’ve got a group of high school kids that are helping us run the concessions this year, which will be a tremendous help.”
Along with the volunteers’ help, Johnson said they are also pleased to receive community support.
“You never know — that person next to you may be one to benefit from your involvement,” she said. “Everyone has been great to help us spread the word about the event, and just help in any way we need them to.”
