For nearly the past month, I’ve done a travel series for the Neosho Daily News. I hope that you have all had the chance to read the stories thus far.
Traveling — as many of you know — is a hobby for me. I have enjoyed it ever since I was a young kid. Of course back then, the price of gasoline, food and lodging was not as high as it is today, but one of the main focuses of this series is to give people the opportunity to go with their families and not have to “break the bank” for a good time.
I am currently working on the next travel piece — which will be coming out in Wednesday’s edition.
One of my fondest trips I took when I was a kid was to the national parks. There was Yellowstone, and the Smoky Mountains and yes, historical places such as Civil War and Revolutionary War sites.
I can’t remember how old I was but we opted to travel to Yellowstone National Park. We left around 5 or 6 a.m. and made it to Cheyenne, Wyo., in the first day. After bedding down in a hotel, the next day we made it to Yellowstone, staying near the Old Faithful Inn. If you have never been there to the park, I encourage you to go.
Basically, Yellowstone is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features such as Old Faithful Geyser. That geyser erupts on every hour. There is so much to see and do at that park. There are other geysers, as well as walking trails and beautiful scenery and wildlife.
Another place that I truly enjoyed traveling, as youngster was not to far away — St. Louis. Even though I am a St. Louis Cardinal fan, there is the St. Louis Science Center, the zoo, various museums and then there is the Arch.
So during the long weekend is coming upon us — if you can — take the family on a day trip or even an overnight trip.
Have a safe Fourth of July weekend.
