On Saturday, hundreds of students from Newton and McDonald counties will participate in the annual We Care Fair at Abundant Life Assembly of God, 700 Spencer Dr., Neosho.

“We Care Fair is a place for the community to come together and help our kids get ready for a new school year,” said Brenda Johnson, Christian education pastor. “Hopefully, the fair will help families not have quite so much financial pressure preparing for school. It is open for school-aged children preschool-high school seniors in Newton and McDonald counties.”
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.

“There are 650 pre-registered kids,” she said. “Pre-registered kids will need to pick up school supplies between 9 and 11 a.m. School supplies for those not pre-register will be distributed at 11 a.m. Anyone not pre-registered will not be guaranteed school supplies. They will be distributed first come first served.”

Johnson said a variety of basic school supplies will be distributed at the fair.

“We hope that if a child gets some supplies he doesn't need that they'll be passed on to someone who needs them,” she said.

There are also other stations available that day, including health, dental, eye screenings and haircuts, Johnson said.

“Many booths [will have] give aways for the kids including Scholastic giving away books,” she said. “Clifford the Big Red Dog will be roaming around with Franklin the Turtle. [There will also be] sno cones, popcorn, hot dogs and the Bounce House. All activities are free for children that attend the fair. We have several hundred pairs of new and used jeans all sizes, pairs of new shoes and new/used coats. Our hope is that all children that need shoes etc., will receive them and that parents only take what is needed.”
