  • I hope that everyone has enjoyed the summer travel series that I have been doing for the past couple of months. As many of you know, traveling is a hobby of mine and I wanted this series to give families a chance to travel around the Four State area, highlighting family fun activities that you don’t have to break the bank to afford.
So, as the summer winds down, the travel series is put on hiatus. But don’t worry, you might see some of the travel pieces pop back up in the Neosho Daily News from time to time before next summer (You guessed it, I have something in the works).
For me personally, this travel series I have learned new things about some of the destinations that I reported on. For instance, I learned a lot about Fantastic Caverns near Springfield, one of which how big the caverns are and that the first explorers were 12 women back in the late 1800s. Led by candles, these women made their way into the cave and even wrote their names on the cavern’s wall.
Another aspect is the Civil War destinations that I toured such as Wilson’s Creek and Pea Ridge. Growing up, I went to both of these places a lot. I remember that we would take a picnic basket with us and after the picnic, Dad – who is a Civil War buff – studied the battles and told Mom, Greg and I about the battles.
Some of the places that I didn’t make it to, but hope to on part 2 of the travel series deal with Kansas and Oklahoma. I have always admired Will Rogers. I would also like to see Big Brutus in West Mineral, Kan.
As a side note, if you don’t have anything to do this long three-day weekend, maybe you could take the family to one of these places. Just watch the weather, I know that it has been very, very hot the last week or so. So hot, that you could fry an egg on the car hood.
