NEWTONIA — America was shaped, forged and pounded out by the blacksmith.

On Saturday, June 4 at the Ritchey Mansion in Newtonia, Missouri, you will be able to witness these artisans at work during Hammer In 2016, A Gathering of Blacksmiths.

Blacksmiths from around the area will be demonstrating their skills and selling their wares.  From the lowly nail and bolt to more fancy ornamental iron, you can watch these craftsmen work and maybe acquire an item or two.

Along with the blacksmiths, several area historical organizations will be attending, sharing their upcoming events of the summer.  Groups and organizations include George Washington Carver National Monument, Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, Pea Ridge National Battlefield, Eastern Shawnee Tribe, Civil War Roundtable of the Ozarks, and others.

Local authors will also be in the Ritchey Mansion with books and stories to share.  The Ritchey Mansion will be open for tours from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  A quilt show will be occurring across the street at the Newtonia Community Center.  Sam’s Kitchen will be serving up breakfast and lunch items.

Admission is free to all events.  The event starts at 8:00 a.m. and runs through 4:00 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Newtonia Battlefields Protection Association and the Newton County Tourism Council in conjunction with their Celebrate Neosho event.
